A winter weekend getaway to Vermilion, Ohio featuring small-town charm, local shops, ice sculptures, and a breathtaking frozen Lake Erie sunset.

As mentioned in our last post where we explored Edgewater Park and walked out onto a frozen Lake Erie, Maggie and I escaped the hustle and bustle of Columbus for President’s Day weekend. Whenever we luck into a long weekend, we try to use it wisely—stockpiling adventures to share with all of you.
This particular getaway took us back to one of our favorite small Ohio towns: Vermilion. Nestled right along the shores of Lake Erie, Vermilion is the kind of place that feels like it belongs in a postcard. We had visited once before in the summer—swimming at the expansive beach, wandering the charming downtown streets—and completely fell in love. So much so that this time, we chose it as our base of operations for a full weekend of northern Ohio adventure.

Our Lakeside Home Base
While we couldn’t snag a cliffside Airbnb like we did in Conneaut, we found a quaint little house less than five minutes from both the beachfront and the town square. Decorated in navy blues and coastal artwork, it carried that perfect seashore vibe we were craving—even if we weren’t directly on the water.
After settling in, we bundled back up and stepped into the crisp winter air to explore downtown and catch our first glimpse of the frozen lake.
A Town That Feels Like a Step Back in Time
Driving into Vermilion’s town square feels like slipping into a simpler era of small-town America. Even in the off-season, there were people strolling the sidewalks. Nearly everyone offered a smile or a friendly hello—something that feels increasingly rare in larger cities.
The downtown area is lined with boutiques, art studios, coffee shops, and locally owned restaurants. My personal favorite? The Ancient Celtic Shop on Main Street. Though small in size, it boasts an impressive collection of historical artifacts—swords, helmets, armor, jewelry—and the staff is as knowledgeable as they are welcoming.
If medieval weaponry isn’t your thing, Vermilion still has plenty to offer: cozy clothing boutiques, charming cafés, and even a classic 1950s-style diner complete with a life-size Elvis cutout in the window. Honestly, how can you not love that?

Community Spirit on Ice
One of the unexpected highlights of our visit was discovering stunning ice sculptures scattered throughout town. We learned that Vermilion had recently hosted an ice sculpture competition, displaying the creations at key spots around downtown.
Locals told us about upcoming events, including wine tastings and—right up my alley—a chocolate-making competition where lucky attendees sample dozens of homemade treats. These small-town events might seem modest to some, but to Maggie and me, they showcase the strong sense of community that makes Vermilion so special.

Twilight on a Frozen Lake
Despite all the charm downtown, our real reason for heading north was the frozen lake.
The main street beach sits just a short walk from the square, and just like at Edgewater, Lake Erie was completely frozen over. We arrived at twilight, the sun slipping below the horizon, casting a fiery orange glow across the ice and snow.
It was breathtaking.
As darkness settled in and the sky shifted to deep blue, the yellow beam from the Vermilion lighthouse swept across the frozen expanse below. Standing there under the fading light, stepping carefully across the ice, felt surreal—equal parts peaceful and awe-inspiring.

We returned early the next morning to see the beach in daylight. While the ice looked impressive under the sun, it simply couldn’t compete with the magic of that twilight glow.

Final Thoughts
In case it wasn’t obvious, Vermilion ranks among my favorite towns in Ohio. It may be small, but it offers enough shops, restaurants, events, and natural beauty to keep anyone entertained. The beach alone is reason enough to visit.
Even after spending an entire weekend there, I never grew tired of its streets or shoreline. And when we drove back to Columbus Sunday night, it didn’t take long for me to miss the simple joys that Vermilion shares so generously with those who walk its sidewalks.
Until summer rolls around and we can return for swimming season, we’ll have to settle for checking the town’s beach cam and watching the dark waves crash against the shore. Even in winter, Vermilion calls us back north.
And knowing Maggie and I, we’ll answer that call soon enough.
